Mini 6 Switch

Hi All,

I am considering either a Mini 6 or WISP 8 switch for a specific application, but I need 2 pieces of information from the community.

1. Can port 2 provide normal 24V Passive PoE? The Netonix website suggests that "normal" 24V Passive on 2 pairs is available on ports 3-6 and 24V passive on 4 pairs is available on port 2, but my application needs to power an ER-X from port 2 as I need 48V on ports 3-6.

2. Is there a CLI guide for these switches available anywhere? I would need to configure the switch using some form of scripting on occasion, and I'd need to be able to check Link Status and configure VLAN tagging on specific ports through CLI commands which could be scripted.

I presume the same OS runs on all these switches, so a document detailing the CLI for the WS-6-Mini would also apply to the WS-8?

Port 2 only has 24VH and 48VH as options. Perhaps you could use it for one of your 48V loads you had planned to use 3-6 for. I use port 2 to power a UAP-Pro since the Pro cares not about voltage being present on all pairs. Of course, it is prudent to check if that is true in your case so standard YMMV caveats apply.

Thanks for that, I'll need to get the spec sheets for the devices I need 48V for and check if they can cope with power on all 4 pairs.

Since you are considering the 8 port as well, I am guessing that you don't need to remote PoE power the switch so the 8 port might be the safer bet.

I am still curious whether I could use the http://routerboard.com/RBGPOE-CON-HP 48 to 24 converter on port 2. It might be a handy device to have on hand particularly where there are long cable runs and high current causing voltage drop.

Perhaps if you explain how the ER-X fits into your needs we can explore options.

I'm looking at a scenario where I could script it so that if there was a link present on one port, it would disable the PoE on the port powering the ER-X and vice versa.

Basically, the ER-X would act as a router and DHCP server etc. only if there was no link on port 1. If there was a link on port 1, that would be the main link to the rest of the network. If I could shut down the ER-X and power it off, and then reboot it again by reapplying PoE, that would satisfy the requirements I've been given.

Any 1G device can safely use 24VH, the problem is you can not use most 10/100 24V devices with 24VH as they just tag pair 3 and 4 directly to the board without using a 4 channel center tab Ethernet Transformer but is it is a 1G device it has to be using a 4 channel Ethernet transformer so it is fine to use 24VH

We do not have a CLI Manual yet but there is full online help in the CLI by pressing "?"

It will depend on how the PD treats the centre tap on the ethernet transformer. A quick check with an ohmmeter may be prudent.

Thanks for the responses, the client has decided that as he needs more ports, he'll go for the WS-8-250-AC in any case, so I'll follow up the scripting in a separate thread. Thanks for the responses.
