IDEA: Port state follows port state

Sun Sep 06, 2015 3:38 pm

Say what? What is crazy Matt up to now.

So the airFiber radios will track RF to Ethernet port state, meaning if the RF drops (rain fade, link failure, etc) the Ethernet port will drop so that the network converges to a backup link very quickly. NICE!

I just had a thought, if I'm using a Netonix as a mid-span injector for my backhaul, which then goes to a router, I have no way to take advantage of this as the airFiber will drop the port, but the switch port connected to my router is still up, so OSPF/BGP will converge slower.

I would like to see the ability to have a port on the Netonix track the state of a different port.

EXAMPLE:

airFiber24 plugged into port 12, router plugged into port 11.

airFiber24 loses RF link, so it shuts down Ethernet to port 12. Port 12 now shows no link.

Netonix then shuts down port 11, which instantly causes the router to activate the backup link rather than waiting for an OSPF timeout.

Thoughts?

Well you can tune ospf and or impliment BFD

Personally I don't care for that feature on the air fiber if your doing in band management because you lose contact/control of the radio.

Now if you're using the management port and not using in band ok i guess???

Tune OSPF and or use BFD

So if your using that feature and in band and say something else is wrong now how do you see the radio is the port is down?

It only shuts down for a few seconds. But it causes an instant convergence.

Don't you have a four second outage or four ping outage when your links fail over?

Please do not try and power af24 on port 11 - lol

Ports 1-4 only depending on model

Even without bfd I had our old af24 like converging in about 3-4 seconds.
Set hello timer to 1 sec, dead timer to 2 seconds.

I was thinking about this for you Matt

I am headed to Canada to meet with Eric and Dave next weekend and I think i have an idea we could impliment that will give you what you want

Basically a new feature for ping watch dog where it does not turn off poe but rather disables a port for x seconds

Could not it be done via LAG ? If the AF24 is down, the other link on the same LAG should continue to pass traffic.

It would be nice to have a option to disable wireless on AF24 if the're too much frame lost or the modulation rate goes too low but it should be managed by the AF24, not the switch.
