More than one NTP Server Config

Thu Apr 23, 2015 6:06 pm

Hi,

It seems we can't add more than one NTP server configured in the WISP switch.

Is there anything planned in the future firmware release to support more than one NTP server configured in the system ?.

Thanks
Frank

Not at this time.
If you can present a good argument as to why that would be needed and enough people agree we can consider it for v1.3.0 firmware road map.

I did add your request for console password to the firmware road map thread. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=295

DID YOU GET MY WARNING ABOUT UPGRADING FIRMWARE!!!!!

Hi,

Yes. I will upgrade the firmware.

Regarding the NTP server, most of the production network has more than one NTP server just to avoid any failure scenario. Atleast you can add two fields, Primary and Secondary NTP servers ( just like in Mikrotik switch ). In Cisco/Juniper, more than two NTP servers are allowed.

Thanks

I am amazed that so many user open the box and laying right on top of the switch is TWO, count them TWO warnings telling them to upgrade the firmware FIRST yet no one does????

WHY WOULD YOU NOT DO THIS ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS A NEW PRODUCT?

Do you guys not remember back in late 2009 and early 2010 when Ubiquiti first released airMAX and there was a new firmware release about every other day.

OK, we are new and the firmware is maturing but for god sakes people at least upgrade it when you open the box and there are TWO warnings that you should upgrade!

PLEASE UPGRADE FROM v1.1.5 IT HAS MAJOR BUGS!!!!

Since 1.2.0rc11 is in the final stages of approval you might as well install it especially since the 2 issues that Mike99 have found is present in v1.1.8 anyway and you can at least get the new features.

I will talk about this with Eric and see what he thinks for v1.3.0.

However you can always overrule us and get enough people to support your request and we will always listen then.

It's not a bad idea but maybe it is me but our WISP runs it's own NTP server and all devices point to it?

For the record, I have been asking for more than one NTP server support.

I use "us.pool.ntp.org". It is a large pool of good servers.

Ahhhh, so you have your own atomic clock? Naaah I know what you mean. But we actually have 2 very independent upstream providers that come into Cisco routers at 2 different locations. Each of those routers is acting as a NTP server with it's own "optimized-for-min-latency" list of 3 NTPs upstream. Then any critical boxes in our network get the 2 NTP IPs of our 2 routers. As we rely more on your switches, yeah we would use 2 NTP server IPs in them.

Not that a second NTP server is a bad thing, but I wonder how do these same folks handle RADIUS since there is only one address for that as well? (no, this is just an example, not a suggestion :nono: ).

In any case, what we do is have a redundant server setup. If one server dies then the other takes over the IP address so, for example, NTP keeps working. Interestingly, a number of our other brand switches (and other devices - a few hundred of them) do have redundant NTP addresses. :leave:
