It's hard to say how an old browser will display the device web page but sometimes even my newer browsers require hitting F5 to get it to display correctly. It is also possible the device is having issues.

Is it possible that SSH is disabled in the config? You didn't say what model, but as long as it isn't a mini, you can use the serial console port to login and see what version it is ("show status"). Also you can check if SSH is enabled by looking at the config ("show config"). You may be able to re-enable SSH as well but I'm not sure (I know SSH can be disabled through the command prompt).

If you can get to a command prompt then you should be able to pull new firmware from FTP. Worst-case there's also the option of serial firmware recovery (slow but it does work).
Today is an average day: Worse than yesterday, but better than tomorrow.
