Hi Jim,
Yea, I think the whole hang the radio in a window idea is crap too! - WILL NEVER WORK
Yes, the cost of a Mimosa link is quite high and puts it somewhere between the AF5 and the AC radios, much closer to AF5, which puts it out reach for any links but to high end customer PTP links as I mentioned above for my WISP.
Will the AF5 out preform the Mimos.....yes, it will. And as I have said I think the engineering that went into the AF5 is TOP NOTCH I just hate the idea of any wide channel 5 GHz link especially one like AF5 which is full duty cycle all the time. If AF5 was only available for WISPs to buy I would love the concept but we all know how I feel about AF5, that horse died a long time ago.
But the Mimosa link is also top notch engineering, not insulting their radio either, but it is high priced for half duplex. Now if it was 11,18,23 I would love it...
And yes I would love to see a side by side from you on these links, I have never said you were not meticulous in your testing and I would not question (too much) any detailed comparison post you put up!
I am frustrated with the time it is taking to get 5150-5250 certifications and firmware from Ubiquiti....I know I know, it is not "all" their fault, the FCC does have a little blame to shoulder.
And "yes" I did find your attempt to defend Ubiquiti in the face of Bill's post a little bit like "Mission Impossible", and I do find some aspects of it funny
(other than the price point - rock solid logic there) but that is in no way insulting you like I think Les thinks I am being. I will say that historically you often posted the good, the bad, and the ugly about stuff but for several months you have been more "pro" Ubiquiti then in the past.
I do totally agree with you that the price point of the Mimosa gear is far too high for CPE deployment, not sure how that will work once they do have PTMP?
I am not sure I like either link (AF5 or Mimosa) being able to chew up such large portions of our 5GHz bread and butter spectrum and the Mimosa radio is "almost" as dangerous for WISPs as the AF5 (the full duty cycle thing).
However one thing I did have respect for Ubiquiti was the fact that they limit channel width on AC PTMP applications but I am not sure if that was done because they want prevent spectrum wars or was a bi-product of certifications? Or maybe it hust did not work well enough to bother with sectors (STN levels). A hint might be in the CL channels they allow in PTMP verses PTP?
I will admit that I have been out of touch with testing "any" new gear with my work with Netonix so I do value bias analysis which I always remembered you as providing but to be honest Jim you have not had any negative thing to say about Ubiquti in a long long time. Now that could be because you are completely happy with everything or you were abducted and brainwashed in your sleep. I just find it next to impossible for a man with your attention to detail not finding something that needs fixed or changed.
Anyway as I said Jim I was NOT insulting you in anyway, I do have respect for your ability and knowledge and when in the past or in the future when I do challenge you I always make sure I have my i's dotted and all my t's crossed but with that said I did think "man Jim is trying real hard here"!
Feel free to come around and chat anytime about anything as you know I have no way to reach you over there. If I could have posted there on this I would have.
