Mounting WS6-Mini in ENC-SW-8X5

Not sure how it is supposed to work, short of screwing into the enclosure, but a piece of Ikea counter mounting rail fits perfectly between the strength webs in the enclosure.

Personally I went and bought an 8/32 Tap, the correct drill bit for the Tap and 1.5" 8/32 screws.

Next I made up a template and drilled the holes through the back plastic wall of box.
Next I gently Tapped the holes to 8/32 thread making sure not to strip the holes.
Next I screwed the switch to the box. You can put a dab of silicon in the box screw holes to make it seal against water but i never did and none of mine leaked.

If you strip the hole in the box you can use a NUT but that is sloppy, JUST DO NOT STRIP THE HOLE when tapping and do not over tighten the screws holding the switch in then you can easily change the switch out if needed.

The MINI uses the bottom of the housing for a heat sink so it is best to have as much contact surface area as possible between it and the enclosure to transfer the heat out.

Plastic isn't the best heat sink, and unless you cut the webs, the switch hits the webs before it sits on the back of the enclosure so there is an air gap. I figure a big chunk of steel makes a good heatsink. It would be interesting to set up two, one mounted the way Chris describes, and one mounted using Ikea rail, put them under the same load, and then graph temperature.

Just figured I'd post it in case other people happen t be looking for mounting options. I just happened to have spare ikea rail in my lab because I built out my lab using Ikea counters.

The only temp sensor that is close to accurate is the board sensor. The CPU and PHY sensors are built into the chip package and even the manufacturer claims they are at best +/- 10% tolerance.

We have sold thousands of the WS-6-MINI and as of yet not gotten any back that are cooked.

The biggest causes of WS-6 damage or failures are as follows:
1) Earth Ground Current from poorly grounded sites especially where the tower is not bonded to the service grounds or connecting 2 devices from 2 different service panels. We have greatly reduced this damage from bonding the DC negative to Earth Ground which we started doing on all units as of September 2016.

3) Defective 3.3V CAPs on one production batch, 2 batches ago. This has since been corrected on the current batch by increasing the CAPs and on the latest batch in production now by redesigning the 3.3V power supply.

with the current generation of switches dave redesigned the 3.3v downconversion circuit to obviate the need to use the chassis as a heat sink, so I'm pretty sure you'd get very close results if you did that test.

Unless something changed, my MINI has air slots into which the webs fit so there was no air gap. I raised the same point with Chris about plastic not being the best conductor. It is still better than air...

Also, I cut the webs because I like the switch to sit lower down leaving more space at the top in case I want to access the reset button.

Yea, the "production" WS-6-MINI has slots for the webs so it sits flat against back wall. You got a pre-production model Les

Chris, I have both and while the slots are there, they force the switch to sit higher than I would like it to be. We had the discussion before about my wanting easy access to the reset button but you dismissed me saying that is not something that should be done up on a tower.

Anyway... I want what I want and I cut the webs to get what I want. Call me stubborn...
