how to install at rooftop in building with no grounding

Mon Jan 30, 2017 11:43 am

Hi guys

So I am going to setup a new customer link but there are no grounding on the premises. Now this is a 100+ rooms Hotel and short of dropping a ground wire from one of the sides of the building ( if they let me ) I dont know how to make a secure installation. It is crazy but they do not have any kind of grounding at all!

Is there anything that can be done other than praying to the thunder gods?

I guees dropping the cable from one of the sides of the building is out of the question due to aesthetics. There are balconies on three sides of the building and they would never allow it in the front of it. Is it possible to drive insulated ground wire alongside the regular ethernet cables??

I think your confused?

If a WISP switch power APs attached to ceiling and or walls and powered through the switch then this is fine.

What is wrong is if you run an Ethernet cable from one device plugged into one electrical service panel to another switch plugged into another electrical service panel. In this even both devices will be powered from 2 different ground potential and you should use fiber to connect the 2 switches.

Or you power a switch connected to AC power with service ground rods then run Ethernet Cable to a Tower that has its own separate ground rods and the ground rods from the tower are not bonded to the service ground rods now you're creating a bond between the 2 ground potentials with the Ethernet cables running between the 2 ground potentials. Radios like ROckets and AF, and AFX radios bind the radio to the tower through the jumper to the antenna. Radios like Nanostations are insulated from the tower steel and have no bond to the tower Earth ground

Powering devices with long cables that are not bonded to another ground source is OK.

Make sure you use cable with ESD drain wire and ESD ends but not those ends that have a pigtail to connect to tower.
