24V Charger/Regulator Dual Power Supply

Sat Jan 14, 2017 8:22 am

What are folks using for a charger and/or 24V dual power supply?

I've been using Tycon's TP-BC24-300 and it works ok, but it has fans that spin up fairly frequently even while it floats batteries.

We use the DR-RDN20 for redundant power. At our -48V core sites, we feed them with DC-DC converters like in the attachment.

At our 24V mini-pop sites we use the DR-UPS40 and appropriate SDR Power supplies. Our 24V sites are generally low power with a Siklu in, a Siklu out, a Netonix switch, and perhaps a local PMP AP. Note that the 24V site diagram doesn't show redundancy, but you would just add a RDN20 and another PS or PS, DR-UPS40 and another battery string.

+1 for the 24 volt design, we use almost the exact same thing. Been very stable. Our only difference is that we use 2 banks of 24 volt batts in parallel but fused separately. Mouser has the parts.

I'm going to be soon maxed out on my 300W tycon charge controllers for 48V, anyone have recommendations for 48V models that support large loads over 300W? Which apparently is actually only 288W LOAD, as it uses part of the 300W for charging.

Have always just wished that Shirc would create the PERFECT WISP SWITCH that simply does everything in one unit. AC power input, and +/- connections for charging your batteries and functions as battery backup system.

So this year by end of Q2 Netonix will hopefully enter into the BLACK for the first time and be debt free.
So after 3+ years we will have paid back our SEED MONEY and received all our back pay to date. THIS IS THE GOAL ANYWAY

After this we plan to build up some cash or HOUSE MONEY and then after that we plan to move forward on some really cool stuff.

But up to the end of Q2 our primary goal was to recover out seed money and get our pay for the past 3+ years so our wives get off our backs. When you roll the dice with your kids college funds and retirement funds wives tend to not be too happy.

So by the end of 2017 we hopefully will have built up some cash reserves for R&D and have money to bring new things to production. Keep in mind is at least $250,000.00 or more to bring a single model to production.

@Sirhc I just had 3 Tycon 48V power controller units fail in the last week, which occured after power outage restored and was in battery re-charge state, thus borrowing power from the load to charge and eventually fried it. Odd thing is these are 300W and I only using 150W or less total.

What models do you recommend as an alternative to Tycon? Nothing too bulky?

I really do not know much about chargers.

The only ones I use for AC ON Grid sites are:
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=c ... s&tbm=shop

They come in 1 to 4 channels for 1-4 battery banks.

They charge each battery independently and are smart chargers with 3 stage charging up to 10A per battery so they can recover fully discharged batteries.

I believe it does not matter if the batteries are in series or parallel as it charges each battery separately.
