How to power a SAF Lunima radio

Chris,

You have said several times here that you are powering your SAF radios with the WISP Switch. How are you doing the cableing since these radios aren't POE?

SAF has different types of radios, some are POE some are split that use co-ax cable to connect the two units

Obviously I am talking about their outdoor units ONLY which are passive POE like the SAF-106 and SAF LUMINA

The SAF 106 takes 48V and the LUMINA uses the 48VH ports

We use the Lumina radios here and I was under the impression the RJ-45 port wasn't POE. So far we have always run a power cable from our -48 power supply.

Our SAF radios are actually manufactured locally here in Brazil. They come in Siemens boxes. There might be some hardware differences.

In one case we are using a FO cable between our router and the radio because there was something goofy going on with the ethernet cable. It would only connect at 10 Mbps.

The SAF 106 and Lumina Radios I have or seen are the total outdoor units that use copper.

If you have a split version or the version that uses Fiber then I do not think we can power those.

Well after looking at the new brochures from SAF maybe they LUMINA is only available with a separate power cable and not POE

I will have to investigate making an adapter box/cable to allow POE maybe?

An adapter box would be cool. I have a tower location that has the following:

4 SAF Lunima radios
1 AirFiber24
8 AirMax radios.
3 Mikrotik routers

If I could power this with one switch that would be awesome.

well we only have FOUR 48VH ports in the A models of the switches both 12 and 24 ports but you have 5 high power devices.

looks like its fourth and long @yoder time to punt , I'll just be waiting for a saf or AF to come downfield now


either that or @sirhc needs to change his approach to ... with 4 high power ports per switch you'll have room to grow with three available ports when you deploy two switches

I understand that it is nice to just plug into the switch! But, I bet you did get a POE injector in the box with every radio. And I doubt many people are using this type switch at a DC site.

Well we do have a small form factor 8 and 12 port coming out soon.

We also have DC versions of the 8 and 12 port small form factor as well as the 12 port rack mount.

We are not sure about the 24 port yet.

Our DC versions will accept between 6 and 60 V DC and we measure the input voltage and current from the battery bank as well as the current draw of the POE devices and switch. Lots of power monitoring!

Our small 12 port version also does have 2 SFP ports + 12 copper ports with POE and can power 4 airFIBERS.

Our small versions are about the same size as a ToughSwitch
