Upgrading From Smaller Switch to Larger

Thu Jan 07, 2016 11:23 am

I'm curious if there are any negative ramifications when upgrading from a smaller (8 or 12 port switch) to a larger switch (24 port) at a site to just load the config file over?

Looking at the config it APPEARS the values for ports 13-24 are there, just ignored on the smaller switches. Is this a correct assumption?

Yes you are supposed to be able to import the config from one model to another but it is a good idea (should not matter) that they be the same firmware version.

OK. So as long as they are the same firmware version, importing from one model to another should work OK you are saying...?

Yes, but "technically" the firmware version does not have to match but is recommended.

Doesn't have to match, shouldn't have to match, but for maximum safety ( belt and suspenders ) have them matched :tinhat: .

It should not have to match but I do not check this obviously from all versions to all versions and from time to time things change in the file.

SHOULD NOT MATTER, famous last words.

All I am saying is the way it is designed it "should not matter" but if you want to play it safe I told you the safest method.

Not sure what else to say here, I am sure you want me to say "it does not matter period" but then I am on the hook if something goes wrong and you find yourself driving 100 Mph to the tower.

No thank you! - LOL
