Today we released the WS-12-400-AC

This is the same as the WS-12-250-AC except that it has 400 WATTS of power and 2 cooling fans.

THis power supply is idea for HIGH POWER consumption sites where you are powering (4) airFIBER 5/24 and also maybe some AF5X radios and some airMAX radios.

Remember the WS-12-250-AC only has 250 WATTS and you are better off not pushing a power supply more than 80% capacity all the time especially in warm environments and if you are powering (4) airFIBER units then you are already at 215 watts including the switch power.

This would also be good for sites where you want to power up to (4) WS-6-MINI switches so they each can power an airFIBER and other radios.

It can be wall mounted with our normal chassis through holes and rack mounted with optional rack mount ears.

On the ws12dc is the only limitation for not being able to do 400w the power supply ? what about the 48v only model can it do 400w?

The WS-12-DC does not have a power supply so the unit is limited by the port limits as follows:
Port 1 - (48VH = 72 watts) (24VH = 36 watts) (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX 1.5 Amps
Port 2 - (48VH = 72 watts) (24VH = 36 watts) (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX 1.5 Amps
Port 3 - (48VH = 72 watts) (24VH = 36 watts) (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX 1.5 Amps
Port 4 - (48VH = 72 watts) (24VH = 36 watts) (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX 1.5 Amps
Port 5 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 6 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 7 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 8 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 9 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 10 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 11 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps
Port 12 - (48V = 36 watts) (24V = 18 watts) - MAX .75 Amps

Also keep in mind these are "sustained" limits at 55C, bursts can be higher and in cooler environments the port will deliver more but the Ethernet Transformer is limited to 1 Amp per pair so a MAX of 2 Amps per port when using VH and 1 Amp when using standard 2 pair POE regardless.

So if you were using each port to the MAX the board can deliver up to 12 Amps but since the WS-12-250-AC and WS-12-250-DC both have a power supply that is rated at 250 watts @ 48V that is only 5.2 Amps

The WS-12-400-AC has a 400 watt power supply @ 48V which is 8.33 Amps which is 60% more amperage.

Also keep in mind that you should not load your switch down with POE load more than an average of 80% capacity of the power supply if you want it to last a long time. Your car can run over 100 Mph but how long would the engine last if you ran it at 100 Mph every day? Then run your car at 100 Mph everyday in the desert heat because most WISP's put their switch in a hot box.

Look at your 1 hour total power graph on the status page for an average power used.

This means that if you have a 250 watt power supply you want your total average watts at or below 200 watts if you want it to last for years.

Since we designed a board that can deliver a LOT of power we decided to provide a unit with a bigger power supply for those power hungry locations with 4 airFIBERs or maybe you are powering (4) WS-6-MINI switches each loaded down.

But maybe you did not answer his question. I think he is asking: Suppose we happen to have regulated 48VDC 400-500W laying around and stick that in the WS-12-DC??? Would it handle at least the 400-500W passing through? Probably. But would it's fan be sufficient ?

It's kind of funny, but based on my experience hacking the WS-8-250-AC, in real-world, running mostly 48V(H) devices would probably run cooler than running mostly 24V(H) devices. Of course with UBNT, average install will have more 24V devices.

As you point out, there are a lot of contributing factors. Every equipment cabinet and climate zone is different. Therefore, given that you provide your boards with very good telemetry, we need a good rule of thumb number for board temperature "average" max. That way, we can graph the board temp with SNMP data and see how often we come close to or exceed that number so we can take action to reduce the cause.

Yes, it will work fine, it has two fans for cooling, and like you said Joe, most of the 48 volt POE power is actually not even dissipated on switch board, it just passes through to the POE radio. I.E> If you have 4 of the 48VH radios pulling 200 watts, all of that power is being used by the radios, not by the switch.

When i do my lab testing, I run at 55 degrees Celsius at full load, and all board temps are within acceptable limits.

I thought I did answer him that the board can handle 12 Amps but the power supplies are the limiting factor?
