Do I need to do anything special to bring an SFP up? I've got a fiber run I just installed - it checks out with a light tester. I plug SFPs into the switch and an EdgeRouter. They both detect the SFPs, but the link doesn't come up.

Not on the switch but then again maybe the SFP modules you are using are not liked by the switch?

Is there a way to determine if the switch "likes" the SFP module or not?

It is a split frequency single fiber SFP, should work - yes?

Should I "sense" light coming from the remote side of the fiber when the fiber is plugged into the SPF? (I realize you don't look directly at it)

At this point you do not know if the Router or the switch or both do not like the module or if a module is bad.

Break it down into simple tests to get a base line to start with.

I would try the modules in 2 switches and 2 routers to determine if one or both units like or do not like the SFP module.

Beyond that you can read down through this thread for modules that other people have found to work.

By tester, do you mean a light source and a meter to measure the dB or do you mean a VFL (visual fault locator) laser?

If you are confident the correct SFPs were selected to go the distance, then perhaps use a pair of known compatible media converters or other kit to plug the SFPs in to test.

Years ago I ran into some issues with HP Procurve kit and HP was blaming the fibre and I was blaming the firmware. An HP engineer came on site with some test kit but could not find fault with the fibre. I tested with my kit and could not find fault. The problem was that neither of us had test kit that included the SFPs so there were two points of doubt that were outside of both test methodologies. My anecdotes do not directly apply to your situation as yours is a go/no go while mine was intermittent.

We found a cable fault.
