ToughSWITCH™ vs WISP Switch™ - Why pay more

Fri Apr 10, 2015 1:16 pm

First off let me say that in no way am I saying that the ToughSWITCH is not a good product and has many uses that do not need a more powerful WISP Switch.

Keep in mind that we are building our switches in North America not China which many of you have asked Ubiquiti in the past to build something here which will add to our MSRP.

But I wanted to express why there is an $80.00 difference in price, below is a table showing some of the features the WISP Switch WS-8-250-AC can offer over the ToughSWITCH Pro 8.

Now if you purchase the ToughSWITCH Pro then purchase the RF Armor wall mount bracket which costs $30.00 MSRP + shipping so lets say $35.00 the difference in price drops to $45.00.

Also above I forgot to mention the WISP Switch offers COMPLETE SNMP support!
We are also working on many more features like VLAN QinQ support.

As I said though they are both great products.
Support is handled on the Forums not in Emails and PMs.

On the TS8, how many ports can provide 24V at 18W simultaneously? The spec sheet says 11.5W per 24V port but I don't think all 8 can do it at the same time.

There are posts on the UBNT forum about users that had problems with using POE on all 8 of the ports at the same time on a ToughSwitch. The unit will not provide it !

The safe limit appears to be five ports.

It of course depends on the wattage and voltage. 48V is fine, but 24V is weak. I have read where four 24V Rockets work and a fifth takes it down.

Forget the spec sheet of the TS. I've personally stopped deploying them strictly due to their failure rate.

Everyone I've deployed has failed at a different interval. Even the one sitting in my cozy Air Conditioned office just powering a few Unifi AP's and Air Vision cameras.

If the WISP Switch stands up to the test of time better. It's worth the slight premium.

I currently has a TS-8 and it is powering 4-24V Rockets and 1-24V Nanobridge with no issue. (Bought two of the TS-8 before I knew about the WS-8-250-AC).

You forget lack of support from ubnt for this "accessorie".

For us, current owned toughswitch will be use for end of line tower with small number of customer. We won't risk other performance issue like we add before. Anyway, we will soon need MSTP so our toughswitchs will probably finish on ebay.

At the end of the day I'd rather give Chris my money for a product he really cares about than give ubnt my money for one they don't. Look at how long it's been since TS had a new firmware release.

The latest shipment of TS8-Pros came with 1.3.1 but they are not making it available to download. Ubiquiti is not saying if there was a minor hardware change that required it or what the changelog is.
