Designed to hook directly to battery bank not a power supply

Hello,
why the models with an internal power supply (eg. WS-26-500-DC) has to be hooked directly to batteries and not to an external dedicated the power supply? What will happen? Why the WS-26-400-IDC, that does have also an internal isolated power supply, doesn't have to?
