3.3V CAP problem

Hi!
I have found, when extending my network when it grows bigger, that I have some of the switches with the v3.3 CAP probelm. I got the repair manual from Julian a year ago I have repaired some of the switches. They do seem to work, but how do I test them thoroughly ?

If you have a WS-6-MINI or WS-8-150-AC (manufactured over a year ago) and you think it is rebooting and or locking up due to the 3.3V CAP issue I would perform this check as well:
Set the switch on bench and create a 1G Ethernet link on each port.
You can use a POE device or a non POE device, makes no difference.
Let the switch run over night and make sure no reboots occurred by checking the uptime on Device/Status TAB


Are you sure that is enough ? Should I load them with traffic ? (I can create an iperf3 script)

I have found that even without traffic if the 3V CAPs are bad they will reboot within 24 hours but sure setup some traffic, can;t hurt.

But as far as replacement CAPs we found better CAPs since Julian days, I will have Dave post the Digi-Key CAP part # and spec here that is much better.

How can I test 48VH, 48V, 24VH and 24V on the ports ?
And do all ports need power on, when testing for 3.3V CAP problem ?

Well if you have an AFX radio which support 24V, 24VH, 48V, and 48VH then there you go. Simply turn the port POE to that option and see if your radio powers up and if each pair is reporting watts which you can see by hovering your mouse over the POE or watts column for that port row.

I usually use a MIMOSA radio to test 48V and 48VH as they boot FAST, way faster than AFX or AF radios and they link up at 1G right away. In fact I have a MIMOSA connectorized radio with 100m cable setup in test station that way I can test POE and link at 100 meter (spec) as a damaged Ethernet Transformer may link up on short cable but fail on 100 meter cable.

Or you can make up the test rig described in How to Bench Test with a couple cheap multi meters and an Ethernet cable.

Ok, so can I just use VLAN (untagged) and link the port on the switch to another port with patch cable like:

Port: VLAN:
1 10 Incoming from PC1
2 10 patch cable to port 3
3 20 patch cable from port 2
4 20 patch cable to port 5
5 30 patch cable from port 5
6 30 patch cable to port 7
7 40 patch cable from port 6
8 40 incoming from PC2

And then do iperf3 test between PC1 and PC2 ?
All ports will link up with 1 Gbps

PC1 iperf3 -c 192.168.1.102 -P 12 -t 86400
PC2 iperf3 -s
(86400 seconds = 24 hours)

When I do cable test, I get this result on an UniFi AP Outdoor+ (48V)

AP is powered with 48V and the port reports 100 Mbps link (like it should)

Hmm.....
Just loading all ports and push 1 Gbps traffic through both ways, does not make the switch reboot ??? I'm pretty sure this switch reboots occasionally, especially when all ports are in use.
Just pulled it out of production, as we couldn't add more equipment to it...

Question: Why do I see short on pairs 3 and 4 on a of devices especially UBNT airMAX 10/100 gear.

Answer:
Because every manufacturer does not follow the proper design specs and use a 4 channel Ethernet Transformer designed for POE with a center tab for each pair. Since pair 3 and 4 is not needed to carry data with 10/100 only links they use them for power only which allows them to use a cheaper 2 channel transformer without a center tap for pairs 1 and 2. They then connect the 2 wires from each pair to the board skipping the need for a transformer with a center tap so the 2 wires from pair 3 are connected directly to the board shorted together for positive and the 2 wires from pair 4 are shorted together directly on the board for negative.

If the device is 1G then you may have a damaged port or cable/ends, does it do the same in another port?
