WS-12-250-AC 80 watt POE

Sat Mar 04, 2023 4:41 am

We have a Ws-12-250-AC, for a few months now 3 ports have been drawing 80 watts.

Switch was running 270 watt POE out for a good couple of months

All 3 ports have different devices on

All 3 ports started drawing 80 watts (normally its 5-6 watts) at the same time

Ports are 48v

Ports doing it are 5,6 and 10

We've de-powered two of the devices so they're no longer using POE, switch is below its max (110 watt total now)

But one port (which needs POE) is still pulling 80 watts.

Firmware has been upgraded to latest (now at 1.5.14)

Seems to be otherwise working OK (hotter than others, but not much)

Switch is on a UPS, but must be 3+ years old now

Ethernet links working fine, test OK so no sign of a short (which I'd expect it to notice anyway)

Anything I've missed or diag info you'd like to diagnose the issue ?

Are you absolutely sure that they are drawing 80W? Damaged current sensors manifest as false (high) current readings.

Nope.

We turned the devices on the ends off a few hours before we got to them, no signs of them using 80 watt (considering they're rated for 50% of that)

Damaged CTs would make sense (would explain how it was able to provide more watts than it was rated for)

While unit does seem warmer than other similar units, the temp increase didn't start at the same time as the extra reported power draw.

Other than miss reporting POE consumption is there any other thing else I should be concerned with ? (is it on its way out?)
